Evolution: Now or Later?
So I was curious, how does everyone here deal with the gameplay of evolving your Pokemon as you're playing through the games? Do you let them evolve as soon as they're able to for the quick power-boost or do you wait for them to learn a move faster in their pre-evolved form and then let them evolve afterwards? Or do you have some other playing style when it comes to when (If ever) you evolve your Pokemon in the playthrough?
Maybe you even have different styles on different games, I'm just curious how you handle evolving and when.
For myself it was quite a long time before I actually realized that Pokemon would learn moves faster in their pre-evolved form than when they had evolved. I'm not sure when exactly I realized this, sometime between G4 and G5, when Tidal mentioned to me how she held off on evolution for moves.
I was pretty startled to learn this, of course, as I'd always just allowed my Pokemon to evolve as soon as they could, never thinking that there might be any real reason to not let them evolve. I mean, they'd get stronger when they evolved and therefore it would make it easier to play through the game, was how I looked at it.
But now that I've learned this kind of thing I've taken to checking out a Pokemon's moves for each evolution stage, planning out what moves I'll want to get on them by the time they're fully evolved. Some Pokemon it ends up not mattering, they'll learn the move eventually when they level up. Some only learn a certain move in one stage and can't in the last (Such as Growlithe/etc, the stones are to blame if I recall) so therefore I hold off on evolving until they learn what I want.
For me it also depends on where I am in a storyline as well. If I require a certain move to beat a gym or a hard trainer then I'll make sure that I don't evolve to learn it quicker, however if it doesn't really effect me much I'll go right ahead and evolve it. The only reason I would hold off on evolution is because of this or it only learns a move in a certain stage.
So I guess I don't really mind evolving in the game as soon as I can, since either way it's going to help me out in the long run.
